

Meet Your Instructor
Derek Ham began his professional career in the military, serving 24 years active duty with assignments across 10 U.S. States, overseas postings, and deployments supporting operations during the Bosnian conflict. Following his military service, Derek spent more than a decade as a MEDEVAC an SAR helicopter pilot, while also teaching survival, wilderness skills and remote emergency response. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Geography, a Master's degree in Environmental Science, and is currently studying Ethnobotany through the University of Alaska.
A graduate and instructor of numerous military survival programs, Derek also trained directly under the legendary Tom Brown Jr.. Derek's written work has been published in both military journals and civilian outdoor and aviation publications.
Today, Derek specializes in teaching wilderness survival, backcountry safety, and emergency preparedness. Drawing on decades of experience, he delivers practical hands-on instruction rooted in real-world scenarios. His courses emphasize prevention, preparedness, sound decision-making, and the self reliance needed to handle unexpected challenges with confidence.
